Slab Desk – Genesis
| Ok, after taking December off to work on some non-woodworking projects and to evaluate the direction I’m going, I’m back to the shop!
As many of my friends know, I’m a technology geek. I’m always looking at ways that I can integrate this with my woodworking projects, the first of which was the gadget table.
Now I’m starting on what I term a “Slab Desk”. I really enjoyed the challenge of working with a big slab of wood with Roma’s Vanity and think the combination of this with a modern design as well as incorporating integrated technology will make a great “ultimate technology desk”.
To the right you can see both a sketch of the design, as well as the slab of Sapele Mahogany that I’ll be using for the top. I probably won’t keep a photo blog for this project, but will post updates here as well as send out Tweets.

A Testimony…
from my good friend Terah for whom I built a project as a gift for her husband…
I cherish this bench and the meaning within (the top is inlayed with a depiction of our family). Its beauty and quality are giving and undeniable. Unnoticeable now, but deeply ingrained into the memories of this bench is the process of designing with Carl. Carl is what made this process flow. From design brainstorming to 3-D computer generated images, from wood choices to technical aspects of building, Carl kept his jovial tone and passion for creating my dream. I’m admiring my piece as I write. Fine work Carl! Thank You.

Roma’s Vanity Desk
The past two months, I’ve been working on a project for my friend Roma. Her and her husband Dave call the type of furniture they like “Northwest Modern”. In matching that theme, Roma wanted a Vanity/Desk. This morphed a bit in the design/creation phase into something that could also be used as a stand alone console table.
This was my first work with a slab (in this case Myrtle) and while I had to be creative in many ways, I really enjoyed it. Of course the results are fantastic and I’m really happy with how it turned out!

Follow along on the Gadget Table build
I soon will be starting on a “Gadget Table”. Designed as a place to store and charge often used personal electronic devices, it will be crafted from Hickory and Honduran Mahogany.
Whenever I build a custom piece, I setup a photo blog for my clients to follow the progress of their piece as it’s crafted. For this piece, I’m setting up a photo blog as well so that anyone can follow along to see many of the steps involved in the design and crafting of custom furniture.
You can view the photo blog here. I will also send out updates through my twitter account. Click Here to follow me on Twitter

Happy Father’s Day Buff!
Back in June, my good friend Terah approached me to commission a “Flansbaum” as a surprise Father’s Day gift for her husband Buff. She wanted something for the foot of their bed — somewhere they could put the ever increasing stacks of books in their bedroom. She also wanted drawers as they are unable to fit nightstands beside their bed. Also something one could sit on. Terah was actively involved in the design and had some of the great ideas that made it into the final design.
All along Terah wanted some type of inlay in the top. However most of our discussions yielded little fruit. While she was returning from a trip up the Straight of Georgia, I got a text from Terah that she had an idea for what she wanted. An inlay representing her husband surrounding and protecting their family. We played with some symbols and the layout to come up with what has been integrated into the top of the piece. I think this goes a huge way in personalizing this piece from Terah to Buff. Way to go Terah!
The piece is made from Honduran Mahogany and Hickory (some of the nicest I’ve seen, with some outstanding figure.) The inlay is Tropical Walnut. See more pictures in the Gallery.

Butterfly Coffee Table Interest?
The Coffee Table I made awhile back (“The Butterfly Table”) continues to elicit interest. It’s my wife’s favorite piece and proudly sits in our living room. She is adamant that this one is NOT for sale!
However since I’ve had ongoing interest in this piece, I am considering doing a limited number of the same design. I would made some minor design and structural changes but the overall look would remain.
The challenge is that the two woods used in this piece are hard to find. Myrtle (the wood in the legs and stretcher) which, while a local (Oregon) domestic hardwood, is limited in availability (especially in thick stock). The Imbruya (also sometimes called Brazilian Walnut and used in the table top and shelf) is just plain hard to find.
I am going to look into sourcing these woods. In the meantime, let me know if you are interested. I’m anticipating a price of $1250.00.
